Hall of Fame 2003 - Late Pyotr Balabuyev

Late Pyotr Balabuyev

Pyotr Balabuyev is being inducted into the TIACA 2003 Hall of Fame in recognition of his innovative design of Antonov cargo aircraft with the capability of carrying outsized cargo anywhere in the world and for his professional commitment and strong leadership toward the enhancement of the aviation industry.

Mr. Balabuyev is recognized as one of the most remarkable leaders and achievers of the aviation industry. He was born in the Lugansk Region of Ukraine and earned his degree in aircraft engineering at Kharkov Aviation Institute. He was hired by Oleg Antonov as an engineer-designer and was very soon promoted as Mr. Antonov’s deputy. He was to go on to hold the position of President, General Designer of the Antonov Design Bureau of Kiev.

During the decline of the Soviet economy, Mr. Balabuyev had the foresight to realize that Antonov could no longer depend on State funding and would have to generate its own source of income. Mr. Balabuyev was able to acquire certification from the government for Antonov as a certified AN-124 operator. As the commercial operator for the AN-124, the company was able to generate funding, produce job opportunities and provided a means to transport outsized cargo to the world with reliability and safety. Antonov will be returning the AN-225 which is the world’s largest aircraft capable of carrying 250 tons of cargo.

Under the leadership of Pyotr Balabuyev, Antonov aircraft has been instrumental in developing the economy of many isolated countries and in opening a whole new market for cargo movement.
