Open letter to Angela Gittens, Director General of Airports Council International (ACI World)

by Vladimir Zubkov

Dear Angela,

It was a real pleasure to meet you again and to have a good discussion on the relationship between our two Associations. At the end of it you delivered a challenge – you stated that TIACA does not pay enough attention to the airport issues and dared me to change this situation. You also said that you’ve been reading our Friday Flyers – so I’m responding through it.

You explained well why ACI has dispensed with the Cargo Committee. It’s natural that every organization has its own priorities and presently air cargo is not one of them for ACI. At the same time, looking back at your experience of CEO for such major cargo hubs as Miami and Atlanta, you demonstrated full appreciation of the importance of air cargo. In this context it would be also useful to recall that 1/3 of the global trade by value is moved through the airports, most of which are ACI members.

Responding to your challenge, I want to make a suggestion through which TIACA could supplement the ACI activities in the air cargo field. It can take many different forms: we can become partners, we can identify areas where the cooperation would be mutually beneficial, we can bring to the agendas of your events air cargo issues which are of importance to the airports, etc.

We talked about the forthcoming ACI events in Narita, Brussels and elsewhere as candidates for TIACA contribution. We can start our collaboration with a pre-event seminar, a presentation during the conference itself, exchange of articles in our publications and even a meeting between representatives of the leadership. And of course we would welcome your participation at the major TIACA biennial event- the Air Cargo Forum - 2018 in October in Toronto.

Though you said that you “challenge” me, I would rather qualify this is an excellent business proposal which may benefit both TIACA and ACI.I’m happy to continue our discussion. I’m sure it will be constructive to establish closer professional links between TIACA and ACI.

I take this opportunity to wish you and your staff and all the ACI members a very Happy Holidays Season and success in the coming 2018.

Vladimir Zubkov

Secretary General
