Latin America featured for the first time at the TIACA Executive Summit

The TIACA Executive Summit has delivered a lot of useful information and gave us very rich food for thought. Followingmy discussion on the Consultancy initiative in our last Friday Flyer; today I would like to reflect on another panel, “Challenges and Opportunities in Latin America”.

For the first time the TIACA event had a panel dedicated to the issues in Latin America. This reflects the importance, which the TIACA Board has attached to the collaboration with the Latin American and the Caribbean regions. Not that long ago we started issuing this Friday Flyer in the Spanish language and in line with our interests for establishing new connections, we are trying to attend more events in Latin America. The newly elected Chairman of the Board, Sebastiaan Scholte, who has worked in Latin America and is fluent in the Spanish language is planning to renew his connections and establish new ones.

I also went to my familiar circles and talked to the representatives of the Latin American and Caribbean countries on the ICAO Council about the importance of air cargo for the trade and economic development in their countries. I have also contacted the ICAO Regional offices in Lima and Mexico City. All of them are very responsive and have confirmed their interests in the issues in the regulatory, safety, facilitation and security fields, which are pretty high on their agendas.

The session: “Challenges and Opportunities in Latin America” has identified quite a number of challenges and opportunities. The important thing is not to leave this as a mere discussion but try to turn the useful exchange into an action plan. I hope that Eric Hartman who moderated the session in an excellent way may continue acting as the focal point for such an effort. Obviously TIACA will be happy to be a part of this.

My colleagues and I will remain in touch with the session participants working towards strengthening our collaboration as well as finding practical solutions to the issues in the air cargo industry.

TIACA Secretary General
