New Board Member Introduction – Pascal Belanager, Winnipeg Airport Authority

by Pascal Belanager

Winnipeg has a long history as a transportation hub. The City can trace its origins back to Indigenous peoples meeting at the fork of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers and the evolution of the fur trade. As the fur trade gave way to grain production, Winnipeg became the gateway to the west and a key rail hub. This legacy remains as Winnipeg is still home to three large class-rail operators. Over time the transportation network further evolved and Winnipeg became home to a number of major trucking firms, taking advantage of the city’s location along the Trans-Canada highway.

Today, the supply chain is being challenged and consumers want faster, better and more efficient ways to ship and receive their goods – and Winnipeg Richardson International Airport is playing a leading role.

Leveraging Winnipeg’s current transportation assets and our location at the geographic centre of North America, YWG is one of Canada’s busiest airports for freighter flights. The key to our success is working collaboratively with our partners to drive economic activity in the region and strengthen modal interconnectivity and operability by combining distribution and logistics capabilities that include real estate assets, road infrastructure and associated services to enhance the next generation of supply chain. A critical part of our activities is around resupply flights to Canada’s North; during most of the year, access to Canada’s North is limited to air transportation and YWG is a launch point for widebody freighter service to the North, providing dry goods and perishables to thousands of people in the most secluded parts of Canada’s Northern Territories.

We are a vested community partner and key asset for the supply chain and will continue to develop our site and critical assets in order to better serve the local community and play a central role in Canada’s trade development.

In closing, I am looking forward to a close collaboration with TIACA and its members as we share our story and learn from others from around the World. As a secondary market in the centre of Canada but a critical overnight hub for air cargo, the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport will continue to thrive and lead transportation innovation and growth.

To all of you in our great Industry, best wishes for the Holidays and a happy and prosperous New Year.
