Helmuth F. Klumpp

Helmuth F. Klumpp had a broad and significant career in international aviation with leadership roles in two global air carriers. A leading international freight forwarder. His success in air cargo led to further general management roles but his mark in the industry was made as an air cargo professional. We honor him for significant and lasting contribution to the air cargo industry as we know it today.

After completing his schooling he worked briefly for the German Federal Railroad and a travel agency before joining KLM where he spent 9 years in air cargo operations in Germany. During this period he rose from clerk to city manager, Neiremberg, to city manager, Frankfurt and subsequently KLM - Freight Manager for Germany.

In 1959 he was appointed Sales Manager-Germany for Air Express International. He was with AEI until he joined Lufthansa in the rapidly expanding freight department in 1960.

For fifteen years he was Lufthansa's delegate to the IATA Cargo Tariff Conference and was a major factor in those meetings. In addition to his cargo leadership, his most dramatic mark on the air cargo industry was the instigation and introduction of the Boeing 747 Freighter which was largely the result of his planning and sponsorship.

Subsequent to leading Lufthansa cargo department Klumpp became General Manager, Germany and finally General Manager, North and Central America for Lufthansa.
