> THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS INTO AIR CARGO HUBS AND ITS ECONOMIC IMPACT ON LOCAL INDUSTRIAL STRUCTURES

The global air cargo industry has been functioning as an engine of economic development for many nations and is a business sector which is showing astonishing growth rates over the last decades. This is largely due to increasing international trade, but also to the implementation of new logistical models, such as the airline hub concepts. In the first part of the paper, it will be discussed how and why international airports are transforming into air cargo hubs. The second chapter will introduce the global air cargo industry and the current trends which can be observed in the market environment. Afterwards, the third chapter explains the concept of hub-and-spoke models, describes its economic effects and presents the situation of hubs as they can be found today.
