Cologne – Lively Rhine Metropolis
For additional information visit Cologne’s Tourism Board’s website: www.koelntourismus.de
The 2000-year-old history of Cologne can be felt everywhere; whether it’s at a visit to the Roman-Germanic Museum, while viewing the roman Praetorium or while strolling past the mediaeval city gates. The Cologne Cathedral is and remains not only Cologne’s but the whole of Germany’s number one attraction. Over 6 million people pilgrimage to the UNESCO world heritage site annually, which houses the shrine of the Three Wise Kings.
Galleries and museums of international standing attract millions of visitors annually to the Cathedral city. Cologne’s museums offer exhibitions and collections covering multifaceted themes: The Roman-Germanic Museum houses an archaeological collection. The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum presents a sensational impressionistic collection, and works of modern art can be admired at Museum Ludwig. Cologne’s sweetest museum variant is the Chocolate Museum. Besides the 36 museums, over 100 different galleries present a range of very multifaceted and sophisticated art. Art is also the main topic of ART COLOGNE. This oldest art exhibition in the world presents works of modern and contemporary art from internationally renowned galleries.
Cologne’s shopping miles, passages and malls entice the visitor to shop and take a break in the cosy cafés. In 2006, Cologne’s Hohe Straße was voted Germany’s “number one shopping street” with over 17,000 passers-by per hour. Cologne’s “Kölsch-culture” is best experienced by visiting the old town. Situated directly next to the Cathedral, the picturesque Rhine promenade is sprawling with typical colourful gable houses. Numerous brew houses entice one to go there. Guests are continuously served with fresh Kölsch, a top-fermented beer that is served in long, thin, cylindrical glasses by a “Köbes” – a Kölsch waiter. The “Cologne sensation” is best experienced during a glass of Kölsch in a brew house. A feeling of live and let live amidst friends…
