Loyola de Palacio is Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner
of Transport and Energy. The 20-member European Commission negotiates international
agreements on behalf of the European Union. Ms. de Palacio currently heads
the E.U. delegation negotiating with the U.S. to draw up an air services
agreement. She is a longtime advocate of a strong, unified European commercial
aviation system. As early as 2000, Ms. Loyola de Palacio chaired a commission
of top civil and military air space management specialists to harmonize
European air traffic management systems into a single European Sky Initiative.
From 1986 to 1999 she served in the Spanish Parliament for Segovia as a
member of the Grupo Popular political party. She has been a member of the
National Executive Committee of that party since 1988. She holds a law degree
from the University of Madrid. |
