China's airfreight carriers lose market share to foreigners
- BEIJING, (WorldACD) - The new acting director of China's civil aviation administration Li Jiaxiang has raised concerns that the nation's domestic cargo airlines will continue to lose market share to global competitors, including giants FedEx and UPS.
Li's fears, which were cited in a China Daily report, arose out of figures showing 2000 domestic carriers controlled a 44 percent share of the international cargo market in 2000, but this figure dropped to 18 percent last year.
"There is a danger that China's cargo airlines are being marginalised," he said. The dismal performance comes despite a push in 2002 by the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC) for the country to develop a strong civil aviation industry by 2020.
