Australia delays more air cargo screening
SYDNEY, Dec 7 (WorldACD) - Australian transport authorities have backed away from key anti-terrorism measures after being advised increased screening of air cargo on passenger flights could jeopardise exports and threaten some industries. After British expert John Wheeler warned in his 2005 security review that explosives could be packed into air cargo and go undetected, the Howard government vowed to introduce mandatory explosives trace detection (ETD) on all exports by March this year and was planning similar controls on domestic flights.
China to decide on int'l routes by year end
BEIJING, Dec 10 (WorldACD) - China's plan on the allotment of the new direct international air routes to its domestic airlines will be finalised and published before the end of this year, the TDCtrade website reported, citing the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC). The report quoted industry observers as saying that there is still much potential to tap in China-U.S. air routes and the emergence of new flight routes and greater frequency of flights will help promote service quality and price competition. Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan Airlines and Shanghai Airlines have applied for the opening of 27 new services to Europe and the Americas, which means an additional of 206 flights per week, and that a sizable proportion of the new flights link destinations in China and the United States.
DOT to announce JFK limits, report says
NEW YORK, Dec 11 (WorldACD) - The U.S. Transportation Department will announce next week that it will impose limits on the number of flights landing and taking off at John F. Kennedy International Airpor in an effort to ease congestion and delays, the New York Times reported. If limits were imposed, they would have to be extended to nearby LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International airports because the caps at JFK could lead airlines to shift some flights to those airports. The federal government wants to formulate a plan before the end of the year so the airlnes and air traffic controllers can begin preparing for next summer's season.
IATA financial forecast predicts downturn
GENEVA, Dec 12 (WorldACD) - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released a new industry financial forecast estimating a global industry profit of US$5.6 billion in 2007 falling to US$5.0 billion in 2008. The outlook is unchanged for 2007 as higher oil prices were offset by strong traffic growth and even stronger revenue growth, the Association said in a statement.
Asia demand for California air freighted food rises
HONG KONG, Dec 13 (WorldACD) - An emerging middle class in China and growing affluence elsewhere in Asia has created a strong market for California's "wholesome and safe" agricultural produce, HKSG reported, citing a Boston-based Logistics Management magazine. But for crops like cherries, strawberries, asparagus and organically-produced perishables, the ability to ship to distant markets by air is immensely important, said a recent report on market growth.
