TREND - Freight traffic growth hits 16-month high
GENEVA, Oct 1 (WorldACD) - Air freight traffic increased six percent in August on the corresponding month last year, the strongest rate of growth for 16 months, according to the latest figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Traffic is expresses in Freight Tonne Kilometres. Traffic growth was led by Asia/Pacific routes ( 8.5 percent) followed by Europe ( 6.5 percent) and the Middle East ( 3.5 percent).
EU pushes through postal services liberalisation
BRUSSELS, Oct 2 (WorldACD) – European Union Member states have reached a compromise deal to liberalise postal services in the EU by 2011, instead of the Commission's preferred date of 2009 to open up the sector. Luxembourg and 10 other member states were granted two-year exemptions. European postal services have already been substantially liberalised over the past decade. However, incumbents have retained the right to maintain a lucrative monopoly over the delivery of letters in the "reserved area" - those weighing less than 50 grammes - in return for an affordable, five-days-per-week delivery service even to citizens in remote areas.
