After Krasnoyarsk: LH Cargo still to remain at Almaty
Apr 30, 2008 (newstodate): While the decision by Lufthansa Crgo to move its freighter hub to Krasnoyarsk, Russia, replacing Astana, Kazkahstan, was driven by pressure by Russia over overflight rights, it has its benefits to the airline as well.
Geographically, Siberia is the shortest way for Lufthansa Cargo to and from Asia, cutting flight time and fuel costs, compared to flights via Astana, according to a company spokesman.
The move will eventually be timed by the CAT II certification of Krasnoyarsk Airport, to be achieved by the end of this year and followed by a six-month period to allow for preparations.
So far Lufthansa Cargo will however remain at Almaty Airport that serves as a hub for the carrier's freighter flights to destinations in southern China.
Among Almaty Airport's current freighter operators are Lufthansa Cargo with two, FedEx with 10, UPS with five, and El Al with up to 11 weekly flights.
