United eyes another merger partner

CHICAGO, April 29 (WorldACD) - United Airlines is said to have its eye on US Airways as a potential merger partner even as a chorus of critics laments that consumers will be the losers in a wave of industry consolidation.

The two carriers are in advanced talks and expect to announce within weeks that they are combining, the Associated Press reported, citing as sources two people familiar with the negotiations. Neither airline would comment. Continental on Sunday afternoon abandoned the notion of merging with United, concluding it is not the "best course" to merge with another airline now.

The scramble for industry consolidation is rooted in gravity-defying jet fuel prices and significant losses after two years of a rather nice recovery.
