Ban looming on use of Soviet aircraft by EU carriers
Apr 16, 2008 (newstodate): If the EU commission follows the recommendations of EASA, a total ban on operations of all Soviet-built aircraft by EU carriers may be expected.
Already in September, 2003, the EU commission laid down that any EU carrier use only aircraft certified by EASA, granting a two-year grace period that was since prolonged before it finally expired on March 28, 2008.
Estimates are than some 260 non-certified Soviet-built aircraft will be comprised by the EU ban, primarily aircraft used by new EU members, and mostly in the air cargo business.
