4/2/2008 - TIACA AWARDS HALL OF FAME HONOR TO KLAUS-MICHAEL KUEHNE AND DELFORD M. SMITH
The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) is honoring the achievements of Klaus-Michael Kuehne, Executive Chairman of Kuehne + Nagel Group and Delford M. Smith, founder and owner of Evergreen International Aviation by inducting both executives into its prestigious Hall of Fame.
They will officially receive the honor at a special Hall of Fame Awards Dinner at the Lauritzen Terminal at Copenhagen Airport, Denmark, on May 13th 2008, the day before TIACA’s Executive Conference.
Gary Bartek, Chair of TIACA’S Chairman’s Council, said: “In Klaus-Michael Kuehne and Delford Smith, we have two outstanding and extremely deserving additions to TIACA’s Hall of Fame. Klaus-Michael is being recognized for his professional leadership and innovative development of one of the world’s leading logistics companies. In addition, this award honors his outstanding dedication and support to education and the development of future industry leaders. Delford M. Smith is being recognized for his innovative leadership in the aviation industry and for his humanitarian and relief projects.”
TIACA established the Hall of Fame in 1997 to recognize and honor air cargo professionals who have played a leading role in the progress of aviation and who through their foresight, performance and dedication have created and grown the industry, which contributes substantially to the global economy.
Klaus-Michael Kuehne is Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors and the majority shareholder (55.75%) of the Kuehne + Nagel Group, one of the leading global freight forwarding and logistics companies with a turnover of CHF18.2 billion Swiss francs in 2006. The Group has approximately 48,000 employees at 830 locations in over 100 countries, skilled in every aspect of the global transportation trade by sea, air and overland as well as in providing high value integrated logistics solutions. The Group’s worldwide warehousing and distribution capacity totals more than six million square metres.
The public interest Kuehne Foundation, set up by the Kuehne family in 1976, has as its sole donor Klaus-Michael Kuehne. The Foundation’s objective is to support training and further education measures as well as to foster science and research in the fields of transport and logistics. Furthermore, the Foundation supports research in medical science as well as sponsoring humanitarian, charitable and cultural projects.
Delford M. Smith is the founder and owner of Evergreen International Aviation, Inc. and has actively directed the company since its inception 45 years ago. Headquartered in McMinnville, Oregon, Evergreen employs over 4,500 people and has 100 bases worldwide.
Evergreen provides total aviation capabilities through its subsidiaries; Evergreen International Airlines, Evergreen Helicopters, Evergreen Aviation Ground Logistics Enterprises, Evergreen Aircraft Sales and Leasing Co., and Evergreen Air Center. Delford Smith also created Evergreen Humanitarian and Relief Services to support local and international relief projects.
TIACA members, industry organizations and the industry press are invited to nominate individuals to be considered for the Hall of Fame. All members of the industry, past and present, are eligible for nomination and the honorees are selected by TIACA’s Chairman’s Council, which includes all past chairmen and the current chairman of the Association.
