Delta, AA cancel many flights on MD aircraft

ATLANTA (WorldACD) - Delta Air Lines Thursday said it is canceling 275 flights through early Friday to run safety inspections on wiring in 117 MD-88 aircraft.

American Airlines Thursday canceled 132 more flights after canceling 318 Wednesday to run safety inspections on MD-88 and MD-80 aircraft. Multiple models of the MD-80 were made by St. Louis-based McDonnell Douglas, and Boeing, the Chicago-based firm that bought McDonnell Douglas.

Most of the affected American flights departed from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Chicago O'Hare international Airport. Two flights at Portland International Airport were canceled on Wednesday.

A maintenance audit conducted jointly by the airline and the Federal Aviation Administration raised questions "regarding an already accomplished directive" concerning how a certain bundle of wires is secured to the MD-80s.
