Asia's airfreight to further switch to ocean transport

TAIPEI, Jan 30 (WorldACD) - The woes for airlines are going to continue, and industry executives and analysts alike predict further migration of cargo from air to ocean, a trend that has been hurting airlines' freight volumes out of Asia over the past two years, CargoNews Asia reported.

"The mode shift will continue," said Giorgio Laccona, president and chief executive officer of forwarder IJS Global, and Steve Dearnley, chief executive officer, Asia-Pacific, of Schenker International, shares the same opionion saying that h has seen "significant conversions from air to ocean freight" in the region.

"The air cargo industry will lose more freight to ocean," said Dirk Steiger, managing director of Frankfurt-based air cargo analysts and consultants Aviainform. "I'm talking traditional air freight, not stuff that has always been reluctant to use air," he added.
