EU raises doubt over Aeroflot dreams to take JAT

Jan 17, 2008 (newstodate): Aeroflot's dream of taking over Serbian carrier JAT during the current privatisation process is at odds with Serbia's accesseion to the EU Open Skies.
Serbia is expected to sign EU's Open Skies Agreement later this year, which will exclude the possibility of a non-EU party's acquisition.
According to the Agreement, Serbia would have to apply the relevant community legislation, 2407/92, from the entry into force of the Agreement, which means that majority ownership and control of an Serbian airline has to be either Serbian or from the EU + Norway and Iceland.
The Agreement also does not foresee any opening of ownership & control structures in the first transition period, and only after that could EU nationals become owner of Serbian air carriers, and Serbian nationals owner of EU airlines.
