Canada, Barbados Sign New Air Services Agreement (December 22nd)

Canada and Barbados recently signed a new air services agreement. This week Canada’s Sunwing Airlines made the inaugural flight, which will provide weekly service until March 7. Both countries were enthusiastic about the new service and expect the tourism market to benefit greatly from it.

All Nippon Airways Co., Air New Zealand Ltd. and Malaysian Airline System Bhd. have been charged by European Union regulators with violating European competition rules. These carriers, along with others charged last week, have two months to defend themselves before the commission. “EU cartel fines typically amount to 2 percent to 3 percent of annual sales, and are capped at 10 percent.”

Mainland China and Hong Kong have reached a deal that will relax present restrictions on the number of all-cargo services from the end of October 2008. In addition, airlines would be allowed to operate passenger services on 49 routes without any capacity restrictions. This will commence in the summer 2008. The proposed agreement also includes other initiatives related to air routes.

India and Hong Kong have agreed to liberalize air services which will increase the number of flights between the two countries. The deal will more than double the existing services, bringing the number of services to 27 for each country. Additional agreements were made including a liberalized code share agreement.

Nepal and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to increase flight frequency between the two countries. “As per the new agreement, the designated airlines of both countries can operate 28 each passenger and cargo flights a week, using any type of aircrafts.” The increased flights are seen as a catalyst for tourism, trade and easy movement.

Approval was given by the Union Government for amendments in the Air Services Agreement between India and Jordan. The initial agreement was signed on October 16, 1989. A boost in trade, investment, tourism and cultural exchanges are expected as a result of modernizing the existing agreement.
