DOT to announce JFK limits, report says

NEW YORK, Dec 11 (WorldACD) - The U.S. Transportation Department will announce next week that it will impose limits on the number of flights landing and taking off at John F. Kennedy International Airpor in an effort to ease congestion and delays, the New York Times reported.

If limits were imposed, they would have to be extended to nearby LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International airports because the caps at JFK could lead airlines to shift some flights to those airports. The federal government wants to formulate a plan before the end of the year so the airlnes and air traffic controllers can begin preparing for next summer's season.

The congestion and subsequent delays at Kennedy, which send ripples across the country and sometimes overseas, occurred after January 1 when Congress tried to increase competition by lifting limits on the number of takeoffs and landings.
