Kazakh airport: cargo growth by 45 pct in 2007

Oct 15, 2007 (newstodate): Astana Airport, Kazakhstan, has high ambitions of continued cargo growth.
The airport cargo terminal has the capacity of handling up to 600 tonnes per day, and the apron can accomodate four freighters at a time.
The airport is primarily pinning its ambitions on expansion of its transfer and transit cargo operations, in addition to serving as an en-route re-fuelling stop for freighter aircraft between Europe and Asia.
In 2006 the airport handled a total of 5,973 tonnes of cargo, and this year's forecast is 8,660 tonnes - an increase by 45 percent, y-o-y.
The forecast for 2008 is a growth by 110 percent to 12,557 tonnes.
In 2009 the airport estimates to handle 18,208 tonnes, in 2010 26,402 tonnes, in 2011 38,282 and in 2012 a total of 55,510 tonnes.
Since June 2006 Lufthansa has operated 5-7 daily freighters through Astana that is also used by KLM and FedEx freighters for technical stops and transfer operations.
