Almaty: Kazakhstan's airfreight gateway

Sep 26, 2007 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Almaty Airport is seeing its total cargo volumes rising fast.
In 2006 the airport handled a total of 53,540 tonnes of air cargo, up 40 percent, and the airport expects a further increase in 2007 by almost 50 percent, to about 80,000 tonnes.
In 2006, 33 percent of the total volume was transit airfreight, up 36.2 percent y-o-y to 17,606 tonnes.
Imports, 29,254 tonnes, comprised 54.6 percent of the total volumes and rose by 46.3 percent.
Finally exports, comprising in 2006 12.4 percent of the total volume, increased by 23.5 percent.
Today about 70 percent of Kazakhstan's aggregated air cargo pass through Almaty Airport that also handles some 60 percent of the country's passenger volumes.
