Gov'ts urged to allow more beyond rights for air cargo

HONG KONG, Sept 4 (WorldACD) - An airline executive has urged governments to liberalise the airfreight sector by approving more beyond rights to airlines so that they could tackle the problem of trade imbalance that was hampering development of the air cargo industry.

Speaking at the Air Freight Asia 2007 conference, Cargolux Airlines CEO Ulrich Ogiermann said although air cargo comprised only 2 percent of global merchandise trade, it accounted for 30 percent of the goods value transported globally, representing an important aspect of the macro economic growth of a country.

Ogiermann said unlike ocean shipping, the aviation industry was highly regulated and appealed for countries to allow fifth, sixth, seventh and even eight freedom rights to enable airlines to address the imbalance in air cargo transportation.

"For every one tonne of cargo that is exported from the Americas to Asia, we are seeing 3.5 tonnes of cargo being exported from Asia to the Americas," he added.
