Middle Eastern carriers lead air cargo growth
DUBAI, July 31 (WorldACD) – The Middle East air cargo sector outpaced other regions in the first half of 2007, growing by 11.7 per cent, compared to the same period in 2006. Worldwide air freight grew only 2.7 per cent, less than the 4.6 per cent recorded in 2006. Over the past two months, however, cargo grew at five per cent, suggesting a possible recovery the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said yesterday.
“This is the second consecutive month of strengthening demand for freight, following the 5 per cent growth recorded in May, and could be indicating a return to historical growth levels in the 5-6 per cent range,” IATA said in a statement.
Middle Eastern airlines led the June freight demand rate increase with 11.1 per cent growth, followed by the Asia Pacific region which saw a 7.4 per cent rise.
