A bipartisan political group head by Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-Minn) petitioned the White House, claiming that the Department of Transportation and executive branch lack the authority to impose a significant rule change regarding the proposed relaxation of foreign ownership restrictions. The House voted against the plan earlier this year, citing national security concerns. The European Union is wary of engaging in an open skies agreement without the US’s liberalization of ownership requirements.

Although it does not imply substantive changes, Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom refused to sign the passenger name record agreement between the EU and US, sending it back to Hungary’s parliament. He named concerns that the deal does not sufficiently protect passenger privacy. Modifications by parliament, if any, will apply exclusively to passengers on planes registered in Hungary.
