IAG flies JWST part to the US
IAG Cargo has carried a key component of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) - due to be launched in 2018 - from London Heathrow airport to Washington Dulles in the US on-board one of its B747 freighters.
The actual start and endpoints of the shipment were Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK and the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, US.
The 850kg equipment - the Mid Infra Red Instrument (MIRI) - was moved on behalf of forwarder Pinnacle International Freight and was booked on British Airways' Constant Climate offering. To maintain stable temperature conditions during transit, an Envirotainer active cooling container was used.
Alan Dorling, head of pharmaceuticals and life sciences at IAG Cargo, said: "From cargos of life-saving medicines to instruments destined for outer space, IAG Cargo is consistent in its delivery of specialist solutions to more than 350 destinations around the world."
