Volga-Dnepr takes fourth IL-76TD-90VD
Russia-based freighter operator Volga-Dnepr Airlines has flown the latest acquisition to its fleet - a fourth IL-76TD-90VD aircraft - on its first commercial flight, a round-trip operation linking Moscow Domodedovo airport with Bahrain.
The aircraft was delivered to the airline in November, but its first commercial flight was not until 31 December.
Dennis Gliznoutsa, vice president of sales at the carrier, explained that the increase in the size of the fleet will allow Volga-Dnepr to respond more flexibly to market demands.
"The aircraft perform to an extremely high standard for air freight transportation and is in high demand by our customers," he said.
"The entry of the fourth IL-76TD-90VD into service facilitates our plans to gain a larger share of the cargo market for shipments in the up to 50 tons category of the international market."
Gliznoutsa pointed out: "The demand for modernised IL-76TD-90VD services due to its ability to operate globally without restrictions and because older version of the aircraft are gradually being taken off the market."
A fifth example of the freighter model is expected to be delivered to Volga-Dnepr in May. The aircraft is currently being built at the Tashkent Chkalov Aviation Factory.
Volga-Dnepr acquired its first IL-76TD-90VD in the summer of 2006. The freighter type is cleared to fly all over the world and, unlike older versions of the IL-76, requires a crew of just four.
