Maastricht gains South American links
|
Maastricht Aachen airport can now boast a direct cargo connection to both Ecuador and Colombia, with Luxembourg-based freighter operator Cargolux stopping off at the Dutch gateway on its way to Quito and Bogotá.
Cargolux is flying the service four times a week using a B747-400F. The launch of the South America flights at the beginning of this month (December) added to the service it already operated linking Maastricht Aachen to Nairobi.
Sander Hejimans, CEO of Maastricht Aachen airport, remarked: "This growth in operations by our valued partner Cargolux is a very important addition to our portfolio of destinations.
"This new trade lane connects Maastricht with South America and helps to diversify the airport's international profile, which already receives daily cargo flights from East Africa, China, Russia, Turkey, the Middle East an Central Asia."
Heijmans went on: "We foresee further expansions in the destination network and will keep working to realise those to reinforce our position in the cargo market."
The gateway certainly seems to be making moves in the right direction. It expects to end this year with a record annual freight throughput and its subsidiary, Maastricht Handling Services, is to expand its operation with a new 9,000m2 cargo warehouse in the first quarter of 2012.
