Ban: Lufthansa warns of consequences
Lufthansa Cargo has once again warned of the consequences of any lasting night-flight ban being imposed at its home hub of Frankfurt-Main International airport.
The freight carrier's board member product and sales, Andreas Otto, confirmed last week that if the decision of Germany's highest administrative court in Leipzig - expected in the spring next year - is in favour of a continuing ban, then many of Lufthansa Cargo's long-term plans will have to be reconsidered.
Amongst the Lufthansa Cargo 2020 strategy, for example, is fleet development - and until the future as regards flying out of its home hub at night is decided, the options the airline has on further B777 freighters will probably remain little more than that.
Lufthansa Cargo's plans to further develop its Frankfurt Cargo Center will also remain largely in abeyance, while contingency plans for action in the event of an adverse final judicial decision continue to be made.
Although Otto remains confident about the future - he is expecting growth in air freight demand next year despite the global economic situation and believes Lufthansa Cargo to be "well prepared for the future" - there is no doubt that the carrier's future operations and success are heavily dependent on next year's court ruling in Leipzig.
