Atlanta anticipates new B777F arrival
Georgia's Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International airport is one of three North American cities to which Qatar Airways is to launch freighter services next month (ACW, 17 October, p2).
The first Qatar Airways B777F will fly into Hartsfield-Jackson on 2 November, and the freighter will from then on maintain a twice-weekly operation to Atlanta from Doha.
According to a spokesperson for the Atlanta gateway, the freighter service will generate an estimated US$12 million a year in economic benefits for the metro Atlanta region.
Hartsfield-Jackson aviation general manager Louis Miller noted: "The addition of Qatar Airways will further enhance our airport's reputation as a leading cargo airport."
He said that the gateway "offers a geographically desirable location for cargo carriers and freight forwarders that want to expand their global networks with lower operating costs".
Bob Pertierra, vice president of supply chain and advanced manufacturing at the Metro Atlanta Chamber, commented: "Qatar Airways' decision to begin air cargo service to Atlanta furthers our position as one of the world's premier logistics hubs."
Plus, Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed observed: "This new direct trade lance enhances the metropolitan Atlanta region's global competitiveness by enabling local companies to gain increased market access to the Middle East."
