Hot dispute over Greenland's airport infrastructure
The issue of Greenland's airport infrastructure is rising tensions in the country.
The recent official report recommends closing the existing Atlantic airport at Narsarsuaq in southernmost Greenland and the transfer of Atlantic flights exclusively to either Nuuk after a significant development of the capital airport, including extension of its existing single 950m runway, or alternatively continue routing the Atlantic flight services to Kangerlussuaq north of Nuuk.
If the decision is taken to close down operations at Narsarsuaq, the report proposes to establish Qaqortoq, also in southernmost Greenland and currently a heliport only, as a regional airport, with potentials for a future upgrading to allow Transatlantic flight services.
